Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

The specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) is a distinct field that encompasses both dental and medical-surgical aspects. The OMS specialist is dually licensed in dentistry and medicine, and is involved in the study, prevention, and surgical treatment of oro-maxillo-facial conditions.

The coordinator of this specialty at Clinica Rotar is Prof. Dr. Horațiu Rotar, a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery, together with Dr. Daniel Ostaș and Dr. Teodora Harina Iuga.

In terms of competencies, oral and maxillofacial surgery encompasses the entire spectrum of dento-alveolar surgery, but in addition to this, it addresses conditions of higher complexity, such as:

  • Emergency and definitive treatment in oro-maxillofacial trauma

  • Treatment of accidents and local complications of tooth extraction

  • Treatment of oral and cervico-facial infections: periosteal abscesses and diffuse suppurations (phlegmons)

  • Pain management in the oral cavity and cervico-facial region

  • Reconstructive plastic surgery for post-ablative or post-traumatic defects of the oral cavity and cervico-facial region

  • Surgical pathology of the temporomandibular joint

  • Treatment of benign and malignant tumors, cystic lesions, of the facial bones and cervico-facial soft tissues

  • Treatment of tumoral and lithiasic conditions of the salivary glands

 

The last four categories can only be treated in specialized hospitals.
